A conversation with Anne-Marie Leys, Manager and Solutions Expert at Madison Partners
Anne-Marie Leys studied electromechanics and computer science at Ghent University. Traditionally, the path that follows looks a certain way: a solitary screen and a career spent deep inside systems and code. Fascinating work, just not the direction she was heading.
"Growing up, I admired women who were creating something real. Women with a strong presence, a clear sense of purpose, and the determination to build something that mattered."
Computer science sharpened her strategic mind. It taught her how to think in systems, how to solve complex problems and how to bring structure to complexity. But what energised her most was never technology on its own. It was people, connection and the satisfaction of turning a client relationship into something that lasts. She was looking for a place that could hold both.
So when she found herself talking to people from Madison Partners, something clicked.
"I was drawn to the variety of the work and the people behind it. From day one, I had the chance to take on real challenges and help shape and strengthen the organisation from the inside."
When Anne-Marie started at Madison Partners, there was no gradual settling in. The learning curve was immediate. So was the trust.
"We share one goal, and everyone brings their full self to the work, learning from each other at every level. People listen to your honest opinion here and you have real freedom in how you work."
She describes it with a metaphor: you learn to swim in rocky waters. There are floaties available if you need them, but nobody hands them to you before you ask. And asking is half the lesson.
“The learning curve is steep, but that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. What might take years to learn elsewhere happens at an accelerated pace here. It’s a unique opportunity, but one that demands curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.”
That kind of environment is not for everyone. It asks you to move before you feel completely ready. To take ownership before every detail is defined. To trust that you will learn by doing, not by waiting until the conditions are perfect.
For Anne-Marie, that is exactly the point.
Anne-Marie does not wait for perfect conditions. There’s no such thing. She moves, adapts and figures it out as she goes, and in doing so, she builds something more valuable than a plan: a track record of doing it.
"Every challenge is exactly that, a challenge. Something to figure out. Something to grow through."
Over the years at Madison Partners, that mindset has taken her further than any linear career path would have. She has built deep client relationships, grown into people management, shaped internal initiatives and helped strengthen the way Madison Partners shows up, both inside the organisation and with clients.
"I cannot imagine sitting in the exact same role for twenty-five years. That is genuinely not for me. I want to keep learning. And I want the people around me to feel that too."
Ask Anne-Marie what gives her the most energy, and the answer comes in less than a second: the relationships.
"Our clients see and treat us as part of their team, not an external party here on a temporary mission."
Her work with E&A is a case in point. A long-running engagement, built over time, where the relationship grew alongside the work itself. It changed the nature of the work and it created trust, openness and a shared commitment to making things better.
"What we built with E&A is something I am genuinely proud of. The work mattered a great deal, but it was the connection that made all the difference. Seeing how much they care about their people and their organisation is what energises me."
Anne-Marie now manages junior consultants, and you can tell she had been paying attention to leadership long before it became her job.
The leaders she has admired at Madison Partners were not the loudest in the room, but the steadiest. The ones whose calm made everything feel more manageable and whose presence communicated: this will be resolved, one way or another.
"When the people above me were not stressed, I knew that everything would turn out just fine. A calm and steady presence changes your perspective and your way of thinking."
For her, being a manager is about more than setting direction. It is about creating the conditions for others to do good work. It is about listening carefully, stepping in where needed, and helping people feel that they are not carrying the weight alone.
"I want to be there for my team. To let them know I have their backs. It is not a one-way street. What do you need? Where can I step in? What difference can we make together?"
Beyond client work, Anne-Marie is part of the Solutions team at Madison Partners, led by partner Niek De Taeye.
We advise clients on how to streamline their operations, improve efficiency, and create the foundations for growth. The Solutions team does the same for our own business, helping us scale in a smarter and more sustainable way.
Out of that same mindset, Madison Insights was born: a curated AI newsletter that cuts through the noise and makes it possible to stay close to what is happening in data and AI, without the overwhelm.
"We do not just talk about AI. We live with it, we work with it, we stay close to it. And we want to make it easier for others to do the same."
For Anne-Marie, the Solutions team is an expression of everything she believes about good work: hold yourself to the same standard you hold your clients, build the strongest foundations from the inside out, and never underestimate the challenges closest to home.
At Madison Partners, that belief shows up in the people. Some of the firm’s strongest consultants come from backgrounds that, at first glance, have little to do with data. But their value lies in how they think, how they connect, and how they see what others miss.
"Niels Tavano, one of our most valued senior managers, has a background in history. He has years of experience consulting for large companies, sure, but the perspective and knowledge he brings, the way he guides clients, it's brilliant. His point of view changes the room."
So, your background might be exactly what makes you the right fit, because it gives you a perspective nobody else has.
When asked what defines Madison Partners, Anne-Marie does not reach for a polished slogan. Her answer is simple.
"The team. The autonomy. The feeling of owning your own direction. The fact that you are in charge of your own plan, your own agenda, your own growth. That’s not a given.”
